We practice EC (Elimination Communication) with our daughter.  You can follow our journey by looking for the posts labeled “Diaper Free”, or in the category “EC”.  Over the past six months I’ve been gathering a lot of experience and information specific to doing EC in Germany, and I’d like to share this with you.  I hope that this page will be useful for someone!

– Tiny Underwear – BabyOne sell underwear down to size 62, which is manufactured by the company “Dimo-Tex“.  Everything Dimo makes runs a little bit small, so size 62 fit my daughter at just 2 months old (she was pretty big though.)  They even have undershirts to match!  I’ve heard that similar underwear is also sold at C&A, but I haven’t checked it out myself.

– Potties, clothing, etc – you can get basically everything you could ever want at this EC-specific shop:  Das Abhalteladen (AbHaLa)

Books (English and German)

EC Simplified – Infant Potty Training Made Easy  by Andrea Olsen  (E-book)

I highly reccommend this book because it is very practical, and focuses mostly on how to EC.  She also has a lot of videos and other resources available.  I do find it a bit expensive, but it was worth the price.

The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative by Christine Gross-Loh

I have not read this book myself, but others have said that it is the most down-to-earth and helpful of the “paper” books out there.  Someday I will get a copy and read it, too!

Infant Potty Training: A Gentle and Primevel Method Adapted to Modern Living by Laurie Boucke (German title:  TopfFit!: Der natürliche Weg mit oder ohne Windeln)

This book takes more of a scientific approach, discussing the history and benifits of EC, and has tons of data and background information.  I haven’t read it yet but plan to in the future.

Diaper Free: The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene by Ingrid Bauer  (German title:  Es geht auch ohne Windeln!  Der sanfte Weg zur natürlichen Babypflege)

This was the first book I read, and although I found it inspiring, I feel that it takes a bit of an “all-or-nothing” approach.  She talks a lot about using your intuition to be in tune with your baby (which in fact is not hard at all, but I think that’s somthing that comes on it’s own when you get started) I found that this book actually made me feel bad about myself for not doing EC perfectly.  It has a lot of interesting background information, and also some good troubleshooting tips, but I would not recommend it as a “starter” book.

Cloth Diapers

Many people who do EC also use cloth diapers as a back-up, to varying degrees.  The best website I’ve found for cloth diapers in Germany is www.naturwindeln.de.  They do not sell diapers, but they have good explanations of every type of diapering system, and thousands of reviews of every brand you could ever think of.  They also have links to vendors.  (Note – this site is only in German!)

My favorite shop for buying diapers is AnGeD  – she also sells many American products which I haven’t found anywhere else in Germany.

Another good one is My-Windelshop.de

If you have any other recommendations for me, feel free to let me know and I will add them!
